At times, the best intentioned teams can become stuck or run into difficulties.
All groups have an inner life which also needs attention.
Tensions, paradoxes, conflicts, jealousies & misalignments are not uncommon in a work context. Unhelpful patterns of communication can become easily stuck and complex power relationships can erode trust & safety.
A healthy well-functioning team has the capability to not only focus on their 'output' & productivity but also on how they are engaging in their relationships and the collective task.
Effective teams notice unhelpful patterns early & attend to them skilfully.
A challenge for an internal facilitator is having enough neutrality, insight & skill to recognise they may also be contributing to such patterns unintentionally.
A neutral external facilitator can play a vital role in helping such teams become more reflexive and self-organising.
